Your Course Content

What you will learn in the Creative Writing Master

The international Master Creative Writing enables you to develop your own artistic voice while expanding your understanding of writing as a form of research, creative practice and social engagement. The two-year programme is a collaboration between four renowned European institutions: SRH University of Applied Sciences (Berlin), ArtEZ University of the Arts (Arnhem), Escuela de Escritores (Madrid) and Scuola Holden (Turin).

You will work on your own artistic project, explore literary questions through research and reflect on the role of writing in a global contemporary context. Online courses, writing workshops and three annual on-site residencies in the partner countries bring together theory, practice and exchange across cultural boundaries.

You will write and develop your work in your first language — at SRH this means German — and receive individual mentoring in that language. International seminars, courses and discussions are conducted in English.

The Creative Writing programme is a continuing education Master’s degree (M.A.) designed for aspiring writers who already hold a Bachelor’s degree and wish to write professionally while engaging in artistic research.

  • 28 students per cohort, with 7 each from Germany, the Netherlands, Spain and Italy
  • Languages of study: German in the weekly text workshops at SRH; English as a lingua franca in joint seminars with all 28 students
  • Each student develops their own major literary project over two years and receives individual coaching in their first language
  • Three times a year, all students meet for two-week residencies at partner locations in Madrid, Turin, Berlin and Arnhem, as well as other European locations
  • Seminars and workshops take place in the afternoons and evenings, making it possible to study alongside a professional career

Artistic research and the development of your literary voice lie at the heart of the programme. You will learn to craft complex narratives, experiment with new forms of writing and present your work in a professional context.

Core areas of study include:

  • Artistic research and narrative practice: developing your own research questions and experimenting with form
  • European literature and theory: engaging with contemporary literary discourse
  • Writing in digital environments: storytelling across new media platforms
  • Authorship and responsibility: exploring writing within social and cultural contexts

Through intensive feedback, peer learning and interdisciplinary collaboration, you will strengthen your identity as a literary artist within a European network.
