An introduction to visual storytelling and cinematic technique

Calendar entry

This academic workshop invites participants to explore the value of studying film—not just as entertainment, but as a lens through which we understand culture, identity, and the world around us. Film combines theory and practice, critical thinking and creativity, making it one of the most versatile and relevant disciplines of the 21st century.

In the practical portion of the session, you’ll learn how to build a 4-point lighting setup, a foundational technique in professional cinematography. This includes the use of key light, fill light, back light, and background light to create depth, dimension, and mood in a visually engaging scene.

In this workshop, you will:

  • Discover how studying film develops analytical, technical, and creative skills
  • Examine how visual storytelling shapes meaning through composition, movement, and light
  • Gain hands-on experience building a 4-point lighting system
  • Discover SRH’s equipment
  • Learn how lighting impacts emotion, attention, and narrative tone
  • Connect filmmaking techniques to broader media literacy and storytelling principles
