Implementation of Accessibility Requirements
SRH University of Applied Sciences Heidelberg has taken care to design and develop its website to be accessible – or at least low-barrier – in terms of layout, usability, and navigation.
The requirements for accessibility are derived from Section 3 of the German Accessibility Enhancement Act (BFSG) in conjunction with the Regulation on the Accessibility Enhancement Act (BFSGV), which was issued on the basis of Section 3 (2) BFSG. The BFSGV defines the accessibility requirements for services offered in the course of business in Sections 12, 13, and 19. The technical specifications are based on EN 301 549. The requirements were implemented in accordance with the specifications of the WCAG 2.2 standard (level AA) and the principles of perceptibility, usability, comprehensibility and robustness described therein.
These requirements have been implemented as follows:
- Navigation and menu navigation are designed to be consistent and user-friendly.
- Texts and content are clearly structured and can be recognised with assistive technologies such as screen readers.
- Page elements such as headings, links, buttons and form fields are labelled clearly and comprehensibly.
- Images are provided with alternative texts that can be read aloud by screen readers.
- The content of the website can be operated entirely using the keyboard, with interactive elements having a visible keyboard focus.
- The contrasts between texts and backgrounds have been adjusted according to the criteria in order to increase readability.
- Layout and font sizes can be flexibly enlarged without content being cut off or becoming illegible.
The website already offers good accessibility in many areas for all users. However, it does not yet fully comply with the requirements of the Barrier-Free Information Technology Ordinance (BITV). As part of an upcoming technical revision, the relevant accessibility requirements will be implemented step by step.
