Tips for your start in Hamm

  • Look for a flat early on - interim rentals or furnished flats are also good interim solutions (e.g. via "Junges Wohnen Hamm" or BfW).
  • Plan your visits to the authorities in good time: register your place of residence, open a bank account if necessary, take out insurance, apply for BAföG.
  • Use local platforms like hamm.de or the Hamm service portal to find information on orientation, transport and leisure.
  • Connect via Facebook or Instagram, where you can find flat share offers, leisure tips and fellow students.

After moving in, you must register your new address at the local registration office within 14 days. Appointments can be limited, so it is advisable to book one online while you are still searching for housing.

Rental prices and comparison

If you are looking for accommodation, you can also look in neighbouring cities such as Dortmund, Ahlen, Unna, Kamen and Soest. These are well connected to Hamm and the train journey is less than 30 minutes.
