The module “Gender and Leadership” explores how gender shapes leadership and career paths. Students analyze power dynamics, discrimination, and intersectionality, and develop strategies for more inclusive and reflective leadership.

As part of the "Advanced Case Studies" series, the module "Gender and Leadership" is on offer for students in the M.A. International Management 'Creative Leadership' and other M.A. International Management students. In this advanced elective seminar, students examine how gender influences leadership and career development across different organisational contexts. For example, women remain underrepresented in leadership positions and struggle with many hidden barriers. Participants will learn to analyse gender and power dynamics within organisations, identify and critically discuss forms of discrimination, and apply strategies for advancing personal career goals while reshaping leadership relationships.
The seminar is offered by Prof. Dr Brigitte Biehl who is widely published on gender and leadership and led various research projects. Through case studies and critical discussions, students will explore key concepts such as gender stereotypes, the double-bind in leadership, and intersectionality as the interplay of gender with race, class, sexual identity, religion, mental health and other things. The aim is to imagine leadership in every new way - as exemplified for example in this artistic research project with film (published as: Biehl, B. & Schönfeld, K. (2023) Writing differently with film: An animated video on gender, language and leadership. Gender, Work & Organisation 30(5): 1611-1630).
