Gemeindediakonie Mannheim is a social organization that supports people with disabilities in the areas of work, housing and leisure. It was founded in 1951 and is an independent service provider in the social sector under the umbrella of Diakonie. Gemeindediakonie Mannheim works closely with local institutions, interest groups and church congregations to enable around 650 people with disabilities to participate in social life. At the same time, it is an important partner for industrial customers in Mannheim and the Rhine-Neckar region and offers professional services in a wide range of sectors. The employees in the workshops are, thus, integrated into everyday working life; for some, the path to the general labour market is also possible thanks to intensive support and encouragement.
The students received the existing energy and water consumption data (including the generated waste). Their task is to analyze various energy supply alternatives that are technically feasible, economically viable, and ecologically acceptable, taking into account the specific energy needs of working people with disabilities.
The students were asked to focus their work on improving the “energy mix”, on reducing the energy losses, and on developing a space cooling concept for the existing buildings.
