FAQs

Your questions about the Deutschlandstipendium

Since the summer semester of 2011, the Deutschlandstipendium has been supporting students and first-year students who are expected to excel in their studies and careers. They receive 300 euros a month - half from the federal government and the other half from private donors. This alliance of civil society involvement and state funding is what makes the Deutschlandstipendium so special.

The concept of achievement on which the scholarship is based is deliberately broad: Good grades and academic achievements are just as much a part of it as the willingness to take on responsibility or successfully overcoming obstacles in one's own life and education. Scholarship holders receive the income-independent grant of 300 euros per month (in addition to BAföG benefits) for at least two semesters and at most until the end of the standard period of study. This allows you to successfully concentrate on your university education.

Students of all nationalities who are enrolled at a campus of SRH University of Applied Sciences Heidelberg (all locations) for at least two more semesters after the start of the funding period can apply for the Deutschlandstipendium.

This also applies to a second or supplementary degree programme, a Master's degree programme or a part-time/dual degree programme. Part-time students and prospective students who are waiting for admission can also apply for the Deutschlandstipendium. Doctoral students, students at federal higher education institutions and students at administrative higher education institutions with candidate salaries are excluded from funding.

According to §10 StipG, you are obliged to inform your scholarship office immediately of any changes in your circumstances that are relevant to the approval of the scholarship. This applies in particular to intended leaves of absence and changes of degree programme.

The Deutschlandstipendium amounts to 300 euros per month. 150 of this is provided by private sponsors such as companies, foundations, alumni and other private individuals. The other 150 euros are paid by the federal government. The Deutschlandstipendium is paid directly to the scholarship holders by the universities. The funding is awarded irrespective of income and can also be received in addition to BAföG. If sponsors donate more than 150 euros per month for a scholarship, the respective scholarship holder receives the additional amount on top of the regular sum of 300 euros.

Scholarship holders receive funding for at least two semesters and at most until the end of the standard period of study. Please note that scholarship holders must reapply for further funding via the Deutschlandstipendium application portal.

The application period for the winter semester 2026/2027 begins on Monday, 1 June 2026 at 8:00 a.m. and ends on Tuesday, 30 June 2026 at 11:59 p.m. You can apply via the Deutschlandstipendium portal. This is an external portal, and you will need to create an account.

Yes, both cancellations and acceptances are sent by e-mail. The results are usually communicated 1-2 weeks before the funding period starts.

No. Scholarship holders do not have to repay the funds they receive.

The selection committee of the university decides on the award.

Previous education and academic achievements, letters of recommendation, extracurricular/social engagement and the special circumstances of the applicants play a role in the selection process for the Germany Scholarship, as do the locations or degree programmes specified by the private sponsors.

No. The BaföG and the Deutschlandstipendium are two complementary programmes. In principle, students can take advantage of both funding programmes at the same time without any deductions. A deduction is only made if a total amount corresponding to a monthly average of 300 euros is exceeded due to the simultaneous receipt of other scholarships. The usual principles of asset offsetting apply to saved scholarship funds, i.e. the offsetting-free limit of 5,200 euros is not increased when a scholarship is received.

This depends on the amount and type of scholarship funding. As a general rule, anyone who already receives material support based on talent and performance that amounts to an average of 30 euros or more per month cannot receive a Deutschlandstipendium.

A detailed tabular overview of the admissibility of receiving other scholarships at the same time as the Deutschlandstipendium can be found here

The Scholarship Programme Act (StipG) was designed in such a way that German scholarships are generally not income subject to tax or social security contributions. Exceptions may arise in certain constellations of private, state-recognised universities. The universities can provide information here.

The scholarship holders

  • inform SRH University about circumstances that may lead to the loss of eligibility for funding (e.g. change of subject area, discontinuation of studies, loss of examination entitlement, changes in studies or a case of hardship),
  • submit a transcript of records at the end of the semester,
  • submit a report on the course of study once a year,
  • engage in activities within or outside the university at least once a year.

A detailed briefing is given after the scholarship has been awarded.
