Julia Bundschuh „The degree program not only taught me specialist knowledge, but above all gave me confidence in dealing with people"

Our alumna Julia Bundschuh completed her Master's degree in Mental Health and Psychotherapy at SRH University Gera in 2024 and now works as a psychologist at Psychologen Gera.

Tell us, what are you doing at the moment and what does your day-to-day work look like?

My day-to-day work is very varied. I work as a psychologist at Psychologen Gera and work both in the practice and for cooperating companies. My tasks include counselling couples, moderating conflict discussions, evaluating psychological tests, taking clinical histories and carrying out group therapy sessions. No two days are the same - and that's exactly what I love about my job.

What makes your industry so exciting for you?

Working with people in very individual, often emotionally challenging life situations fascinates me anew every day. No two conversations are the same - and yet each one is characterised by trust, depth and the possibility of change. This diversity and closeness to people is what makes the sector so special for me.

How do you envisage your future career?

In October, I will begin my training as a psychological psychotherapist at a systemic-integrative training institute. At the same time, I will start a new job in an acute psychosomatic clinic to further deepen my knowledge. My long-term goal is to obtain my licence to practise and to set up my own psychotherapeutic practice in the future. Until then, I am looking forward to gaining valuable experience in everyday clinical practice.

Application procedures are always exciting. How do you remember this phase directly after graduating? Were there any particular challenges?

I was lucky enough to be able to gain practical experience at Psychologen Gera during my studies, which made it easier for me to start my career. The applications for the therapy training programme were a little more nerve-wracking - mainly because, in addition to professional qualifications, personal fit and motivation are also very important here.

What were you able to take away from your studies that is helpful in the working world?

The high practical component of my degree programme made my transition into the profession much easier. I found working with drama patients particularly helpful - it offered a realistic but protected practice environment. Conversation techniques, psychoeducation and dealing with disorder models were also directly applicable in everyday working life.

How did you decide on your degree programme?

My interest in psychology was already cemented during my A-levels. Back then, we majored in education and psychology - and I quickly realised that this was my path.

What made your studies at SRH University special?

Above all, the supportive team spirit among my fellow students and the respectful interaction with the teaching staff. The contact was always personal, open and at eye level - that really enriched the degree programme.

What experiences would you like to pass on to students or young alumni on their journey?

Have the courage to ask questions and try things out - especially in the practical parts of the degree programme. Take every opportunity to get a taste of practical work and use supposed uncertainties as an opportunity to grow. And: networking is worthwhile - many doors open through personal contacts.

How did the degree programme prepare me for the world of work?

"The degree programme not only taught me specialist knowledge, but above all gave me confidence in dealing with people - one of the most important prerequisites for my day-to-day work."
