Here’s what it’s all about:

  • From SRH graduate to an international career in cyber security
  • Why broad skills matter as much as technical expertise
  • How AI is reshaping work in cyber security today

After completing his Master’s degree in Computer Science at SRH University in 2021, Tyler Italiano has built an international career in cyber security. Today, after working in Germany and the United States, he has returned to Berlin, where he continues to protect organisations from digital threats.

His career began in Hamburg as a Security Engineer before he returned to the United States, where he worked for General Mills and later for private equity firms in cybersecurity-focused roles. In late 2025, Tyler returned to Germany to start the next chapter of his professional journey.

Discovering a passion beyond the classroom

Looking back, Tyler says one of the greatest strengths of his studies was the freedom to explore topics that genuinely sparked his interest.

SRH gave me the opportunity to discover the topics I was truly interested in and then I was so compelled to scratch that curiosity that I dove a lot deeper into that topic beyond the coursework.

Beyond technical knowledge, he credits the programme with helping him develop essential professional skills such as time management, teamwork and the ability to quickly learn new concepts – skills that continue to shape his career today.

More than just technical expertise

For Tyler, studying Computer Science was about much more than programming. "The professors were super supportive", he says. "They gave me a broad understanding of how the industry would work, different sectors and then different perspectives."

He especially appreciated the interdisciplinary approach of the programme. Courses outside traditional computer science, such as law, helped him better understand the wider context of the industry.

"In Cyber Security, it's a lot of people management. It is the soft skills, the human touch, being able to communicate well and manage people."

Your Master’s in Cyber Security

Would you like to protect businesses from digital threats and help shape the future of IT security? On the Master’s programme in Computer Science – Cyber Security (M.Sc.), you’ll deepen your knowledge in areas such as network security, cloud technologies, artificial intelligence and information security management – and prepare yourself specifically for an international career in cyber security.

How AI is changing computer science and cyber security

Artificial Intelligence has rapidly transformed Tyler's day-to-day work. Tasks that once required days of research can now often be completed within hours. At the same time, he believes that strong fundamentals are more important than ever.

"You really need that core foundational and fundamental skills to be able to understand what you're reading and what you're doing, how to prompt, how to get an agent to specifically do the things that you do."

For Tyler, AI is not something to fear but another tool that enables professionals to work smarter and continue developing their expertise.

A favourite spot in Berlin

After living in Hamburg, the United States and now Berlin, Tyler has explored much of the city on foot. His favourite place is Tiergarten. "Because I have the luxury and opportunity to walk from all those beautiful buildings straight into like this green space."

A big thank you to Tyler for sharing his experiences and insights into his studies and career with us. 😊
