Here’s what it’s all about:

  • Students gain exclusive insights into the day-to-day life of a Bundesliga club
  • Modern rehabilitation and return-to-play concepts are taught in a practical way
  • Interaction with experts enhances understanding of physiotherapy in professional sport

As part of the compulsory elective module in Sports Physiotherapy, seven students on the Bachelor’s degree programme in Physiotherapy at SRH University Campus Heidelberg had the opportunity to gain an exclusive insight into the practice of sports physiotherapy at TSG 1899 Hoffenheim. They were accompanied by their programme director, Prof. Dr Annika Jahn.

The visit took the group to TSG’s rehabilitation centre in Zuzenhausen, where they were welcomed by the centre’s director, Bernd Steinhoff. The focus of the excursion was on the topic of ‘Return to Play’, a central component of sports physiotherapy work. The students received both a theoretical introduction and practical insights into the rehabilitation measures that support injured athletes on their journey back to competitive sport.

Following an introductory presentation on the procedures and strategies involved in the rehabilitation process, various physiotherapy and sports science measures were demonstrated and discussed. The participants were particularly impressed by the direct practical relevance: they were able to experience modern diagnostic and treatment methods first-hand and engage in discussions with the experts on site. 💡

A person is holding a ball up while another person watches in a training room. Both are wearing athletic clothing. The room has a bright, cheerful atmosphere with plant motifs in the background.

The field trip provided the students with valuable insights for their future careers and vividly demonstrated the role that physiotherapy plays in elite sport. Through the practical delivery of the content, they were able to deepen their theoretical knowledge and gain important insights for their own physiotherapy work.

We would like to thank Bernd Steinhoff and his team for the fascinating insights and the opportunity to look over the professionals’ shoulders, and we look forward to future collaborations. This experience has once again demonstrated how important the exchange between academia and practice is for the study of physiotherapy. 👏
